Unlike other genres, threats are difficult to label as such because the characteristics (i.e. length, format, formality, etc.) vary in each threat (Gales 2011); however, the genre does share one purpose: to threaten. Threats are statements made directly or are other utterances where the illocutionary force is the threat itself. However, one aspect of threatening language still understudied is: how has language contained within threats changed over time? Such an investigation can contribute to our understanding of related language crimes. Not only does the study of threatening language have historical value, it also aids the fields of authorship analysis, documenting language variation within the field of threats, and linguistic profiling. Implications from this study will aid in our understanding of changes within threats as a genre, allowing forensic linguists to be better prepared when conducting threat assessments. I performed a corpus and appraisal analysis on nineteen threatening texts and examined changes in lexis (e.g. popular language), in syntactic constructions (e.g. modal usage) and in semantics (e.g. stance). I hypothesize that as society became more interconnected due to technology and since language became more informal, expressions of graduation and levels of formality will have shifted to favor informality within the genre of threats. The results revealed that much has stayed constant, such as highly intensified language and a favoring towards informality that is uncharacteristic of written language. However, there have been some shifts, such as the evolution of the macrostructure in threatening language. This indicates a necessity for further study to understand such developments and how they relate to related linguistic events.
