Previous studies have determined student-athletes are graduating at a higher rate than their non-athlete peers; however, student-athletes are less successful in obtaining careers than their non-athlete peers after graduation. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine the best approaches to educating and advising Division II student-athletes in order to develop realistic perceptions and expectations for life after collegiate athletics while still encouraging student-athletes to remain competitive at the highest level possible in their sport. A sample of 12 participants was drawn from the population of coaches, advisors, athletic department personnel, university counselors, and career counselors at a Division II university in the Southeastern U.S. Semi-structured interviews, observations, and document review took place and data was coded into six themes: a) open communication, b) mentorship and community networking, c) integration with campus resources, d) education on building a back up plan, e) balanced goal setting, and f) utilization of campus resources. The present study concluded best practices for advising and educating student-athletes are: a) create an environment of open communication and provide scheduled meetings for student-athletes, b) create mentorship programs and networking opportunities for student-athletes, and c) integrate and utilize campus resources through the development of an off-season curriculum. Future studies may consider replicating these findings with a larger sample of experts to provide greater validity. Future studies may address the significance of each workshop type to build an efficient, impactful curriculum for advising and educating student-athletes on the transition to life after collegiate athletics.
