Patients admitted to long-term care facilities with dementia often display challenging behaviors. The purpose of this quantitative pre-test post-test project was to determine if or to what degree the implementation of an educational intervention to increase staff use of non-pharmacological interventions focused on pleasant events for dementia patients would increase staff knowledge and decrease the number of challenging behaviors in a long-term care facility in Southern California. Staff was educated using the Staff Training in Assisted-Living Residences (STAR) program. The Neuman system model provided the theoretical foundation for this project. Samples included 28 staff members and 11 patients. The Dementia Knowledge Assessment Tool 2 (DKAT-2) and Activator, Behavior, and Consequence (ABC) card were the tools used in this project. A paired sample t-test measured the statistical significance of staff knowledge (t (27) = -8.899, p < .05) which indicated that there was a significant increase in staff knowledge after education was provided. The frequency and severity of challenging behaviors of dementia patients before and after interventions are graphically depicted. All the 11 patients demonstrated a decrease in frequency of their challenging behaviors in the posttest. Four out of 11 patients exhibited a decrease in severity of challenging behaviors after the interventions were provided. Future recommendations include facilities to emphasize and provide continuous education to their staff and implement non-pharmacological interventions including pleasant events for dementia patients to reduce the frequency and severity of challenging behaviors. Keywords: dementia, non-pharmacological interventions, challenging behaviors.
