The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rank suicide among the 10 leading causes of death in the United States. In a national representative sample of adults, findings suggest that victims of sexual violence are six times more likely to report experiencing suicidality than non- victims. The purpose of the clinical scholarly project (CSP) is to increase suicide prevention among adult sexual assault survivors at a Forensic Services Unit (FSU) in the Western Region of the United States. The quality improvement project (QI) utilized Orlando's Deliberative Nursing Process to examine if screening for suicide by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Registered Nurse (SANE-RN), would lead to an increase in acute mental health referrals in this population. Current practice of the SANE-RN is to rely on suicide screening results obtained during triage in the emergency department (ED). In the pre-intervention phase, a retrospective chart audit was conducted of adult sexual assault survivors that presented to the ED, evaluated by a SANE RN and if a mental health referral was completed. In the intervention phase, the SANE RN administered the P4 Suicide Screening Tool to sexual assault patients ages 18 and above prior to discharge from the FSU. The results of the QI project found that no mental health referrals occurred. The clinical findings are not statistically significant however, it is clinically relevant as knowledge about suicide improved among SANE-RN's and provided another access point for patients to be screened for suicidality.
