This qualitative case study examined one school district's transition from a traditional model of instruction to a personalized model of learning through its strategic design process. No studies have examined the change process from a traditional model to a personalized model from the lens of strategic design. Data for the research was gathered through a focus group session with elementary teachers and a focus group session with secondary teachers who began implementing a personalized model of learning for their learners. District administrators also participated in interviews with the researcher. Additional data was gathered through documents submitted by elementary teachers as part of their classroom meeting conversations and from an administrative electronic file which contains evidence of progress toward the district's vision pillars. All data were analyzed and coded using Dedoose, a web-based software site. Research results indicate that using the strategic design process is a viable way to manage the change process from a traditional model of instruction to a personalized model of learning. It is essential to have both strategic direction and strategic alignment in order to facilitate this change. In addition, the research revealed benefits and challenges presented by the transition process at the levels of learning, instruction, and the organization.
