Encryption is a critical component of securing modern technology. The information shared around the world daily relies on encryption to ensure safe transmission of data. The purpose of this research project is to review how modern security enables terrorist organizations the ability communicate and coordinate efforts in secret, posing risks to national security and citizens around the world. The use of encryption, law enforcement's ability to decrypt data, and privacy concerns have become the focus of many debates. Solutions to the terror threat and a balance of privacy continues to slow any progress towards a solution. Terrorism has ventured into the digital realm and in doing so makes mitigation efforts harder. The same utilities taken for granted by everyday people are also afforded to those that seek to harm others. It is recommended that the technology community begin assisting efforts to slow terrorism and support laws that address security and privacy equally, so that they do not diminish the integrity of encryption as a security measure.
