The present study investigated whether the relationship between a heterosexual male and his father associate with the male's perceived similarities between his mother and wife. In the last century, the study of human mate selection has heavily utilized the patterns described by Sigmund Freud's (1900) Oedipus complex, that a man will seek a partner that he perceives similar to his mother (also known as the psychoanalytic theory of mate selection; Epstein & Guttman, 1984). Researchers have heavily focused on mother's influence of mate selection in males, and have neglected to study if the relationship with the father might have influence in the mate selection of their sons. This study aimed to address this gap in the literature. The present study hypothesized that (1) the more similar/different that the participant perceives himself to be like his father, the more similar/different he will perceive his mother and wife to be, (2) the more positively that a participant recalls his relationship with his father to have been, the more similar he will perceive his mother and wife to be, and (3) there would be a positive correlation between participant's conscious and unconscious perceived similarities between himself and his father, and his mother and wife. A total of 78 male participants completed the survey material; the survey material included a demographics questionnaire, brief personality inventory (BFI-s), a retroactive attachment inventories (s-EMBU), and a set of questions created for the present study (Direct questions). The results suggest partial findings that the relationship between a male and his father is associated with the perceived similarities between his mother and wife. Also, the findings suggest that directly asking a participant about his perceived similarities was a reliable method of gathering data. In light of these findings, future research of parental influences on mate selection should explore the influence of both the opposite-sex parent and the same-sex parent.
