In the banking industry, research has shown there is a gap between strategy execution and alignment concerning technology projects. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative single case study design examined how strategic alignment and strategy execution in relation to information technology projects executed in the banking industry has an impact on operational effectiveness. The research questions supporting the study were: Research Question 1 (RQ 1). How do information technology projects align with organizational strategy? Research Question 2 (RQ 2). How do information technology projects align with business strategy? Research Question 3 (RQ 3). How do information technology projects align with information technology strategy? Research Question 4 (RQ 4). How has any lack of strategic alignment in the organization impacted operational effectiveness? Sources of data for this study included archival project data from three distinct projects that were similar in size, scope and budget, and interviews of five employees involved in those projects. The interviews incorporated the study participants' views on business strategy, organizational strategy, and information technology strategy. The interviews also included the employees' views on strategy and alignment, how well strategy is communicated throughout the organization as well as how alignment can impact operational effectiveness within the organization. Key findings from research and data analysis indicated that alignment with strategy does exist with the information technology projects examined, but there are some challenges in how strategy is communicated throughout the organization and how employees perceive operational effectiveness. This research suggests that although alignment may exist, operational effectiveness can be negatively impacted.
