Startup businesses fail. Over the past 22 years, startups have been failing in the first year at a mean rate of 21.2%. In the past 16 years, the mean rate of failure after five years is over 51.8%. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). During the time period from 1971 to 2008, higher education increased their coursework over 10,000% from five to 5,000 classes. Therefore, the question must be asked, "Are we teaching the right things?" According to Morris and Kaplan (2014), "at present, there is no standardized content that is generally acknowledged as the domain of the discipline of entrepreneurship" (p.135). Thus, this unique cross-sectional study asked actual entrepreneurs to rate various competencies that led to their success in business. The results found the competencies of Tenacity and Resilience and the core academic skills of Sales Ability, Ethics, and Management ranked highest. Additionally, demographic variables such as the type of entrepreneur and education were found significant and can be used not only to guide coursework for business curriculum but also to customize to the student.
