The study aimed to understand the impact of a cognitive intervention program (Cogmed Working Memory Training - CWMT) on working memory and inhibition in children between the ages of 9 and 17 with a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The study looked at theoretical working memory models and results from neurocognitive measures to understand potential improvement after completion of CWMT in 13 ADHD participants ages 9 to 17. The following hypotheses were tested: (a) Visual and verbal working memory will improve after CWMT, assessed through objective and subjective measures, (b) Response inhibition will improve after CWMT on objective and subjective measures, and (c) A significant and positive relationship will be found between response inhibition and visual and verbal working memory. Findings from the study indicated significant improvement on visual and verbal working memory tasks, and no significant improvement on the response inhibition task and in behavior and day-to-day activities. The findings of this study support a significant near transfer effect of the CWMT with non-significant far transfer effects. Theoretical networks implicated in CWMT improvement potentially involve the alerting/vigilance network and parts of the executive network (i.e. effortful control) in the Posner and Petersen (1990) model, and the visuospatial sketchpad and phonological loop from the Baddeley and Hitch (1974) model. The mechanism in how these networks work together to lead to improvement is unclear. Future studies should further investigate the role of brain networks to have an increased understanding of the improvements of CWMT. The benefit of individualized training should further be considered, along with an investigation on why some participants may benefit from training, while others do not.
