The older adult population of the United States is increasing in size at a significant rate. Using a multi-dimensional definition of health, the wellness of this population is critical for each individual and society at large. Understanding that physical activity benefits people in various ways, there is growing concern that most older adults are sedentary. Innovative, evidence-based interventions are important to design for this group. This study measured the effects of a six week, bi-weekly, modified, dance-based intervention on the self-reported health-related quality of life, depression, and sleep quality scores in older adults ages 60 and older. The intervention was designed based on constructs of the Health Belief Model for behavior modification. This non-experimental study used a pre/post-test design with a convenience sample from a north eastern region of the United States; the p-value was set at < .05.

Health-related quality of life was measured across eight domains of health with the SF-36 survey, depression was measured with the GDS-S survey, and sleep quality was measured with the PSQI survey. Due to a small sample size (N = 20), the Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test, a non-parametric test, was used to analyze the data with IBM SSPS® Statistics 25 software. Effect size as related to the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was determined for each statistically significance result. Results revealed statistical significance across sleep quality and five out of eight domains of health-related quality of life. Statistical significance was not found on depression scores. Open-ended questions were used pre-study to explore perceived barriers to physical activity for this demographic. Reasons for adherence to the study, for those who completed the study, were explored through open-ended questions post-study.
