This thesis philosophically discusses problems related to Confucian Musical- Cultivation (Yue Jiao) in the Pre-Qin Dynasty. The Musical-Cultivation was an important part of Propriety-Musical Culture and went into extinction after the Warring-State period. Nowadays, people fail to understand what the Musical-Cultivation is, partly because they misunderstand basic concepts like Sound (Sheng), Music/Poem (Yin ), and the Musical (Yue). In particular, the Musical (Yue) contains different kinds of art forms, such as Poems, Music, and Dance etc. So, we should take the differences among the basic concepts (i.e., "sound", "music/poem" and "the Musical" etc.) and the different art forms into account when we discuss Musical-Cultivation. Based on a clear understanding of the concepts, our thesis will demonstrate how the Sound, Music/Poem is realized in the objective world in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 and 4, we will divide Musical-Cultivation into two parts: (i) how the Musical is realized in the objective world and (ii) how the Musical affects subjective consciousness. The objective part can be further divided into two sub-parts: (a) the composing of the Musical and (b) the performing of the Musical. Likewise, the subjective part can be divided into two sub-parts: (a) the appreciation of the Musical and (b) the saying of the Musical ( Yue Yan). All these four sub-parts form the final structure of Musical-Cultivation. Throughout our discussion, we will constantly consider the different effects of poem, music and dance etc., and the matching and coordination between these effects. In my opinion, this structure is useful to analyzing problems related to Musical-Cultivation. It is also important to clarify the procedure of how Musical-Cultivation worked under the support of relevant social systems. In the first section of Chapter 5, we will discuss the school system in the Pre-Qin Dynasty to demonstrate how Musical-Cultivation is projected upon a social system. In the second section, we will focus on the disadvantages of the system and the solution that Confucius gave in The Analects. In the final section, through the new interpretation of the relationship between the Propriety and the Musical, we will reconstruct the arguments or dialogues on Musical-Cultivation of different schools (i.e., Daoism, Mohism, later Confucianism etc.). Unlike some previous studies, we think the ideas of Daoism optimize rather than antagonize the Confucian view on Musical-Cultivation. Another breakthrough of our study pertains to the Classic texts we dealt with in the thesis. With the structure of composing, performing and appreciation of Musical, we can link up different texts including the Record of the Musical (Yue Ji), Yue Lun, Yue Shu, the Analects, Spirit Stems from Fate (Xing Zi Ming Chu), Mister Lv's Spring and Autumn Annals, Zuo's Biography of the Spring and Autumn Annals, Guo Yu, Shang Shu, Tao Te Ching, Zhuang Zi, Mo Zi and Bai Hu Tong etc. Our success in interpreting and linking up these relevant Classics will also verify the usefulness of our Method and Structure.
