Data breaches are an inevitable threat in today's online society. The advancement of technology has led to more advanced cyber attacks and has caused the personal information of millions to be exposed. However, a major problem further lies within the laws that require entities who experience a data breach to report the situation to the affected individuals. The research in this paper focuses on finding grounds for implementing a federal mandatory notification law and the benefits such a law could have in both recovering from and preventing data breaches. The research also provides methods of maintaining reputation after experiencing a breach, and the dangers of having vast amounts of data being collected from individuals.
