The number of individuals diagnosed with dementia is rapidly increasing while the field of geropsychology is rapidly diminishing. A diagnosis of dementia is commonly accompanied by depression, anxiety, and thwarted belongingness as the patient's sense of identity disintegrates. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential of a collaborative venture between the fields of neuropsychology and geropsychology that would equip existing therapists with the knowledge to effectively treat this population. The research question guiding this study was: what are the evidence-based therapy techniques that will assist mental health practitioners and medical staff in treating geriatric patients and their caregivers? By equipping its professionals to treat these patients better, the psychology workforce can ensure that patients with dementia have an ethnically- and gender-diverse practitioner. By identifying the most effective treatment approaches for this delicate population, the rapidly approaching mental health crisis can be avoided. This systematic literature review led to the conclusion that art, music, and reminiscence therapy are the most effective therapy techniques to be used with dementia patients. Future research should focus on creating a handbook or training module that would result in the appropriate expertise in ensuring the safety of elderly patients diagnosed with dementia.
