Background: In the present study, significant-other caregivers of multiple sclerosis patients age, gender, degree of worry, degree of hopelessness, conformity to gender-roles, as well as the duration of the relationship, type of MS their partner had, and the length of time their partner has been ill were examined as predictors of reported relationship satisfaction. Relationship satisfaction is being examined because not much is known about the impact multiple sclerosis has on the caregiving partner and relationship satisfaction is linked to other areas of mental health and well-being.Study: 56 participants were recruited from peer-to-peer MS caregiver support groups on Facebook. Participants completed a demographics questionnaire, a gender-role attitudes questionnaire, Beck Hopelessness Scale, Penn State Worry Scale, and the Couples Satisfaction Index. Results: There was a negative correlation between hopelessness and relationship satisfaction of significant-other caregivers of MS patients (p < 0.0001). There was also a negative correlation between Worry scale score and relationship satisfaction of significant-other caregivers of MS patients (p < 0.002). Further, there was a significant main effect of the extent to which one agreed with the gender-roles attitudes questionnaire question "it is a man's job to take care of his woman" (p < .05). Contrary to hypotheses, age, gender, duration of relationship, type of MS their partner had, and the length of time their partner has been ill were found not to be significant. Conclusion: Degree of hopelessness and worry, as well as the sense of responsibility the caregiving partner felt in taking care of their partner and if someone else was in the home were the best predictors examined of relationship satisfaction. Potential limitations and clinical implications are discussed.
