Followers capitalize on the influence of supervisors to develop themselves professionally. A constructivist grounded theory research method was used which began with interviews of those who have experienced and grown through a supervisor's influence. The stories and experiences of individuals 25 years or older with strong professional development goals were gathered. Participants included 13 professionals across myriad career specialties ranging from first-responders, educators, and the military. All, except one participant had college educations ranging from bachelor to doctoral degrees and ranged in age from 26 to 45 years. The central research question was What is the experience of being influenced by your supervisors in terms of your own professional development? The results of the study show that while supervisory leadership style, including transformational leadership style, matters, it is the self-improving and aspirational mindset of the follower that recognizes opportunities, ultimately determines the professional growth approach, and sets this dynamic in motion. Depicted as a fluid and dynamic bi-directional flow, follower aspirations are influenced by the leader's ability to effectively collaborate, communicate, and encourage the growth of followers. Through this influence, supervisors demonstrate a viable and visible future for the follower. For their part, followers grow and develop by and through their own intentions and actions while intentionally seeking role models who provide visible and constructive mapping of that future. In today's fast-paced and ever-changing global organizational landscape, this research narrows the gap in scientific literature as it highlights opportunities for leaders to identify and recognize the needs, motivations and drives of followers to harness their own professional development and the role they-the supervisor and their leadership style-serve in this process and presents an hypothesis of follower developmental mindset for future study.
