Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospitalized patients, increases their morbidity and mortality, and predisposes them to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Herein, we utilized our ischemia-reperfusion model to investigate the efficacy of hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels in mitigating AKI to CKD disease progression. We hypothesized that HA hydrogels absorb pro-inflammatory cytokines or alternatively, they alter kidney gene expression. From our preliminary results, there is no evidence of cytokine absorption, and there is evidence of some changes in gene expression.
