My study employs a qualitative approach to examine perceptions of self-esteem and the global connectedness of at-risk, first-year university students who took a second language course in high school at one institution during their first year of college. Their first-year college students' perceptions of their past experience with foreign language study in these two areas have been compared with those of students who did not study a second language during their secondary education. After conducting a two-week long research project on the campus of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, I concentrated on coding and analyzing the data I collected from forty-four freshmen college students. Key words and phrases were recorded and tracked in order to gauge a thematic baseline for feelings, emotions, and ideas of empathy, vulnerability and exclusion. The findings revealed that the students in this research attached certain words and expressions to their journey within second language acquisition (SLA) that were reflective of self-esteem and global connectedness. The results substantiated that students' perceptions of increased self-esteem and global connectedness were not solely contingent upon second language acquisition; however, SLA may have had some impact on how they view themselves and the world around them. As a result of this research, I recommend that further explorations on second language acquisition be done within varying academic and economic tiers for students in order to enlarge the conversation and data pool. I do believe that in doing so we can enhance the techniques currently in place to enable students to feel better about themselves and others.
