The purpose of this study was to establish baseline trends in attitudes toward online- facilitated English Ph.D. level courses and programs within higher education English departments. Data were collected from English faculty from 14 different colleges and universities using a web-based survey to determine perceived barriers of online-facilitated English literature, the perceptions, and attitudes toward online learning, and the perceptions and attitudes toward online-facilitated English literature programs. An effort was made to determine if the trends suggest a positive or negative attitude towards online learning, online Ph.D. level English Literature, and what, if any, trends exist in perceived barriers in online Ph.D. level English Literature. Research indicated that the overall attitude toward Ph.D. level English was overwhelmingly negative. Furthermore, research indicated that a significant barrier in online Ph.D. level English literature was the perception that it would negatively impact student-instructor and student-student interactions.
