Since marriage equality was passed nationwide in the United States in 2015, there has been a surge in interest among LGBTQ individuals to marry and create families. Yet, there has been a paucity of research within the psychology literature regarding the motivation and aspirations to have children among the LGBTQ people, including psychological and societal barriers to achieving this goal. The purpose of this current study was to explore motivation to have children in a diverse sample of LGBTQ individuals, considering whether level of differentiation moderated the relationship between motivation to have children and family of origin acceptance. The study incorporated 192 (n = 192) individuals who completed the following measures: Crucible Differentiation Scale (CDS), Parenthood-Motivation List (PML), Flourishing Scale (FS), Family Reaction Scale (FRS), and Social Support Scale (SCS). Contrary to the hypothesis, level of differentiation did not moderate the relationship with motivation to have children. As predicted, a negative correlation was found between the Social Control subscale of the Parenthood Motivation List and the Global Crucible Differentiation Scale (r = -0.426; p < .001). Also as expected, a more negative reaction from the family of origin upon coming out as LGBTQ as assessed by the FRS was significantly correlated with both a decreased motivation for children (r = -.374, p = .000) and lower levels of flourishing (r = -.215, p = -.215). These results suggest that LGBTQ individuals who do not desire children are just as flourishing as those who do. Significantly, the results suggest that LGBTQ individuals endorse many of the same motivations for children as their heterosexual counterparts but may feel less impacted by social pressure in making this decision. Future research might consider how motivation for children could manifest in other diverse segments of the LGBTQ community in order to assist clinicians in supporting these individuals.
