The role of contact in decreasing prejudicial attitudes toward members of the LGBT community is evidenced across multiple settings (Anderssen, 2002; Overby & Barth, 2002). This research expanded upon literature examining the role of contact toward LGBT individuals in non-familial relationships (Herek & Glunt, 1993) to examining the role of contact on the parent-child relationship. One of several limitations to the positive influence of the contact hypothesis includes a high degree of religiosity (Lau et al., 2014). Therefore, this study sought to increase understanding of how a religious parent's beliefs are influenced by contact with members of the LGBT community. In this mixed method study, the role of contact was examined in how it related to changes in parent-child relationships and parent religious beliefs prior to and following child's disclosure. Semi-structured interviews with 75 self-identified Christian parents of LGB youth were analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method, along with follow-up nonparametric analyses to determine statistically significant changes. The results of this study indicated themes of both overall relationship quality and emotional closeness, parents reported significantly negative changes post-disclosure, with increased positive changes across time. The role of contact significantly influenced a parent's emotional closeness with their child when considering contact made through LGBT friends, engagement in child's activities, and contact via community. Similarly, contact was a significant influence on support and acceptance through the means of LGBT family, community involvement, and contact via community. Parent's degree of engagement was also significantly influenced by LGBT contact, specifically through contact with friends. Finally, parents also reported their beliefs regarding sin were significantly influenced by LGBT contact with friends, family, community involvement, and contact via community. Implications of the data on providing clinical care to religious parents and families of sexual minorities post-disclosure are discussed.
