Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth report higher rates of suicide ideation (SI) and attempts compared to their heterosexual peers. Sexual orientation victimization (SOV) and social support are known risk and protective factors, respectively. The purpose of the current research was to examine SOV and sources of social support as determinants of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among sexual minority youth. Three conceptual frameworks, Joiner's interpersonal psychological theory of suicide (IPTS), Meyer's minority stress model, and Tardy's model of social support were employed. Data come from the first of four waves of a longitudinal panel study of the risk and protective factors of suicide among sexual minority youth in three cities. Only LGB cisgender participants (N = 835, age 15-21, M = 18.3) were included in two empirical studies that were conducted. In the first, structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to develop and test multiple mediation risk models for suicidal ideation, lifetime suicide attempt, and suicide attempt risk. In the second, a compensatory model of SI was tested using SEM with SOV and four sources of social support (parents, teachers, classmates, and a close friend) as latent independent variables. All models included controls for gender, sexual identity, age, ethnicity, race, receiving a free school lunch, and site. Half of the sample (52.0%) reported suicidal thinking during the previous two weeks, 16.7% reported they had attempted suicide, and 43.6% reporting ever experiencing SOV. In the first study, each of the final three models predicted a substantially large percentage of the variability in suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and suicide attempt risk (52.4%, 37.8%, and 37%, respectively). Results from the final multiple partial mediation models suggested that SOV exerted significant direct and indirect effects on suicidal thinking and behaviors, suggesting that the addition of SOV to the IPTS may be warranted among LGB youth. In the second study, SOV and three sources of social support (i.e., parents, classmates, and a close friend) were significant predictors of suicidal ideation, but support from teachers was not significant. Implications for counseling psychology are discussed.
