Gender and sexual diversities have a history of conflict with -- and exclusion from-- organized religion (Fukuyama & Ferguson, 2000; Yip, 2005; Schnoor, 2006). This conflict has created a specific issue that could result in an increased need for mental health services among the LGBT community: LGBT people have the task of integrating their sexual and religious identities, which they have been told are mutually exclusive. In order to be able to support LGBT clients as they do the self - work of religious and sexual identity integration, mental health professionals should learn more about the intricacies of the process (Dahl & Galliher, 2009; Murr, 2012). Through the use of semi - structured, in - depth interviews with ten adult, LGBT people, this phenomenological study has identified common themes around the experience of the integration process to better inform future therapy. Using the lens of Identity Process Theory as first described by Tajfel & Turner (1979, 1986), the study explored the question, "What do LGBT people believe mental health professionals should know in order to be competent supports during the sexual and religious identity integration process?" The writer analyzed transcribed interviews, using the phenomenological reduction process and the data used to create textural and structural descriptions. The descriptions then allowed connections to be made among different aspects of the experience of identity integration in order to construct meanings. Emergent themes included LGBT attitudes towards religion/spirituality, personal reactions to religion, aspects of identity integration, social influence on identity integration, individualism, LGBT community concerns, and therapist education. Recommendations for future practice are included, as well as suggestions for future research.
