The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of components of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) on the military leader's decision-making model. A key problem for the military are leaders failing to balance how they lead people and manage operations. All branches of the military are plagued with stress, exhaustive operational tempo, and less access to needed resources to execute the mission. Leaders need the right EQ tools to effectively motivate and lead their troops through these difficulties. The study findings indicated better outcomes for leaders who applied EQ components in making decisions. These results highly favor a recommendation for the military to consider factoring EQ components in training, development, and feedback in developing leaders to address and resolve issues impacting mission effectiveness. This study is important to military personnel, as it offered proposed solutions to further examine EQ's impact on a leader's decision. The results will assist leaders to proactively assess potential outcomes of their decisions based on their application of EQ concepts. This study used a qualitative research method across 38 retired military personnel in the senior non-commissioned officers, field grade officers, and higher ranks. The 15 questions in the study gave insight into the impact and outcomes of EQ components on making decisions in two critical areas of personnel factors, training to retention and organizational impact on mission readiness. This research created a platform for military leaders to start the dialog on removing the perception that caring for people at a level equal to or greater than the mission is not a cause for concern, instead it is a cause they must embrace immediately especially with both mission and people gaining significant benefits.
