The purpose of this research was to evaluate the level of economic espionage that has been perpetrated against the United States by the Chinese government. This research also examines different methods of deterrence that could be used to protect American organizations from the onslaught of attacks that occur on a daily basis. Research of this nature remains necessitous due to the extensive damage that economic espionage costs organizations and the United States. Case studies are provided that detail some of the major attacks against American organizations, along with recommendations that could be used to limit or prevent economic espionage attacks from occurring in the future. Detailed deterrence methods, as well as a theory to disrupt Chinese Internet service, is also explored. This research concludes with recommendations for organizations and the American government to develop active defenses combined with defense-in-depth measures to combat persistent threats.
