Researchers often aggregate Hispanic subgroups during statistical examinations, despite studies suggesting there are unintentional hidden effects on analyses because of cultural differences among Latino intraethnic groups. This study disaggregated the Hispanic population by both ancestral origin and generation to examine social control and differential association factors that may influence violent and nonviolent delinquent behaviors. Building upon preexisting research, this study examined to what extent social controls and differential association predicted antisocial behaviors among 200 United States born second-plus generation Mexican/Mexican American and Puerto Rican adolescents, and assessed how social controls and differential association differed across the two subgroups among those who self-reported violent and nonviolent delinquent behavior. Using the National Longitudinal of Adolescent to Adult Health Survey's dataset, binary logistic regressions, independent sample t-tests, and chi-square analyses were performed to answer the research questions. Findings from this study indicated social control and differential association predictors varied among United States born second-plus generation Mexican/Mexican American and Puerto Rican adolescents. Additional aggregated analyses confirmed the suppositions of past researchers that an amalgamation of the Hispanic population obscures statistical results. Further studies are needed to examine other generations, larger Mexican/Mexican American and Puerto Rican sample sizes, and other Latino ancestries.
