Thesis (M.A.)--University of California, Davis, 2009.
The community and built environment context is an important part of the lives and experiences of youth. Youth have a unique perspective of the built environment; however, they often lack a voice in community decision-making. Participatory action research (PAR) can be an effective method of sharing youth perspective, creating community change and empowering youth. This thesis is an evaluation of the participatory process of Youth Voices for Change (YVC), a PAR project that was conducted from September 2008 to June 2009 in the community of West Sacramento, California. The participatory phase of YVC consisted of a series of workshops with 10-15 youth, aged 13-19, that occurred weekly for about 12 weeks and concluded with a community youth event to display their work and get community feedback. The goals of YVC were to engage youth in conducting a community assessment around issues of youth well-being and the built environment. This evaluation focuses on the achieved levels of youth participation, individual competency development, and the creation of successful youth media products. To evaluate the project, surveys and focus groups of the youth, adult facilitators and attendees of the youth event were conducted and analyzed. Summarized findings were that opportunities for youth participation were limited due to the framework of the project, but that YVC did create opportunities for meaningful youth participation through strong adult/youth relationships, youth directed curriculum and effective transfer of ownership at the conclusion of the project. Youth increased their capabilities in presentation skills and technology capabilities (such as photography, videography, and computer use), but the lack of reflection activities limited the youths' potential for learning. Finally, YVC created media (photos, videos, interactive map and other products) that satisfied the youth and the event participants, but with which some of the adult facilitators of the project felt disappointed. Higher quality media production was limited by constraints on time, the structure of the curriculum and conditions within the group dynamic. This evaluation can illuminate ways in which geographers can practice collaborative applied and youth participatory research projects with youth participants and community organizations.
