The research question investigated in this study looks at the way language is used in young adult novels that have an instance of police brutality at the center of the narrative to uphold or disrupt dominant narratives of police violence against African American adolescents. Critical discourse analysis was employed through the lens of Critical race theory with a focus on counterstorytelling. The analysis of three young adult novels, All American Boys (Reynolds & Kiely, 2015), The Hate U Give (Thomas, 2017), and Dear Martin (Stone, 2017) revealed four categories of narratives and counternarratives: visibility, respectability, fear and safety, and media. Perpetuated by history, media, the public, and Black parents, the dominant narratives the authors present serve as a contrast to the counternarratives also presented that offer glimpses into how the interactions between Black adolescents and police impact the adolescents' understandings of their own identities as they relate to their race and power.
