The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine if and to what degree a relationship exists between Grit and perseverance and Locus of Control and perseverance in high school dropouts returning to their education. It is not known, if, and to what degree, Grit and Locus of Control correlate to perseverance of high school dropouts who re-enroll in a drop out recovery program. The theoretical foundation was based on Social Learning Theory which sets the groundwork for the theory of Locus of Control and contributes to the theory of Grit. The study contained two research questions focused on determining if any relationship existed between Grit and perseverance and Locus of Control and perseverance in high school dropouts returning to their education. The sample for this study included 145 participants who enrolled in a dropout recovery program in the Midwest. Data analysis included Point Biserial correlations between the Grit-S survey and perseverance and the ANSIE Locus of Control survey and perseverance. The results suggested that there was no correlation between Grit and perseverance (r = 0.018, n = 145, p = 0.831) nor Locus of Control and perseverance (r = -0.043, n = 137, p = .606) in high school dropouts returning to their education. In conclusion, perseverance of high school dropouts returning to finish their education did not correlate to either Grit or Locus of Control. This suggests that these two non-cognitive traits cannot serve as predictors of perseverance in this specific population.
