Cash incentives are widely used but in some cases come with undesirable drawbacks. These include the overjustification effect, in which pre-existing motivation is lessened by the additional and subsequent removal of a cash incentive, and regulatory burdens that arise from the use of cash. We seek to address these motivational challenges with the use of badges, a tool from gamification. We test the use of badges as motivators and find that the drawbacks of cash are compensated for, though at the cost of motivational efficacy.
