Plea bargaining is a mechanism that has been used by the court system for many years. Plea bargaining is the process where a criminal defendant and prosecutor reach a mutually satisfactory disposition of a criminal case, subject to court approval (Devers, 2011). About 97% of cases that go through the criminal justice system, are resolved by plea bargain (The Innocence Staff, 2017). Because plea bargaining is a large part of the court system, it is important to understand and monitor the effects on the individuals involved in the plea-bargaining process. Literature on plea bargains suggests more minorities are offered plea bargaining than whites (Demby, 2014). Thus, the purpose of this proposed research is to better understand North Carolina Central University students' and residents' of Durham County, North Carolina perceptions on plea bargaining and its impact on minorities. To offer a theoretical explanation, the Critical Race Theory (CRT) will be used as the frame of reference.
