Introduction: Efficient management of solid waste in urban and semi-urban cities has remained one of the most intractable challenges confronting efficient practice of environmental health in Nigeria. Solid wastes are commonly found in heaps along Nigeria streets and roads. The sustainable management of waste approach aims at global environmental quality, and environmental quality is a pre-requisite for a rise in per capita welfare over a period of time. This study aimed assessing the sustainability of solid waste management intervention for Kaduna Metropolis, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Methods: The study was a descriptive cross-sectional and the study populations were households staff of Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority Private Waste Collectors. Systematic random sampling was used to select 552 households used for the study while sampling frame (20) was adopted for other populations. Semi-structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on institutionalization of solid waste management, collection, disposal and treatment of solid waste, cost and public willingness to pay for solid waste management, share responsibility of the agencies involved and legal framework of the waste management. Data collected were subjected to descriptive and inferential (multiple proportional test and chi-square) statistical analyses at p>0.05. Results: More than half (52.2%) of the respondents agreed with the institutionalization of solid waste management in the metropolis is very important and necessary. Larger percentage (59.6%) of the residents agreed that there were designated points provided for the temporary waste collection prior to disposal and treatment. Majority (59.6%) of the respondents were willing to involve in ensuring proper solid waste management within the metropolis. Most (60.3%) of the respondents affirmed that waste management is a shared responsibility between the government and the citizens. More than half (64.5%) of the residents attested to the identification of legal framework established for solid waste management in Kaduna metropolis, which revealed the involvement of KEPA on the law/policy/ regulation. There was significance difference between the legal frame work and solid waste management in the Kaduna Metropolis. Therefore there is a legal framework established for solid waste management in Kaduna State. Conclusion: Households are willing to pay for services to ensure proper solid waste management and there is a legal framework put in place by the Kaduna State Government, thus, the solid waste management system is sustainable within the Metropolis.
