African-American gay and lesbian youth have been virtually invisible and voiceless. This research asserts that African-Americans, in the larger community, generally have had a low tolerance for gays and lesbians, significantly rejecting homosexuality. There is a history of exclusion and silence that is tied up in the complexities of oppression and homophobic ideals that ultimately lead to rejection of this subculture. According to the Center for Disease Control (2014), young people who practice this lifestyle (LGBT) are two times more likely than their heterosexual peers to have attempted suicide. According to the Center for Disease Control (2014), there is a disproportionately higher rate of negative behavioral incidents among this group that contribute to violence and safety concerns in the school setting. In adulthood, the repercussions of these incidents frequently manifest as mental health issues and higher incidents of substance abuse/alcoholism. The Internet in offering chat rooms, groups and other supportive structures, is often a lifeline of therapy and support for the 50% of gay and lesbian youth who go online seeking relief from frequent suicidal thoughts. Using qualitative content analysis, logical interpretations of Internet content and observations are made by the researcher about whether the Internet is being used as a support tool for African-American gay and lesbian youth as it relates to the Jurgen Habermas democratic conception of the public sphere, and the communication action theory. The researcher makes a social critique using qualitative content analysis to logically interpret themes and patterns to examine the Internet as a means by which gay and lesbian youth have constructed an online public sphere. Through qualitative content analysis, the idea is to determine a link between the required deliberative structure and theoretical conceptions of the public sphere and communication action in the Internet Social Network websites content. The emancipatory potential of this research is evident as it shows how the Internet is being used as a tool to counteract the negative public discourses in the lives African-American gay and lesbian youth. The Internet is a critical resource in providing a voice and a platform of expression for African-American gay and lesbian youth seeking emotional support and positive reinforcement. Findings suggest that African-American gay and lesbian youth are using the Internet to construct a new online public sphere.
