This dissertation project is a historical documentation of select contemporary theatre companies and movements that are currently shaping and redefining Latinx theatre. I track three large case studies in the city of Chicago: Teatro Luna, Teatro Vista, and Carnaval (as part of the national movement propelled by the Latinx Theatre Commons) primarily within the contemporary time frame of 2000-2015. I examine these U.S. Latinx theatre companies, projects, and movements in relation to their strategic alliance building, and the ways those social ties reinforce and trouble the demarcation of cultural boundaries and identity-forming transactions for Latinx practitioners in the 21st century. My project asks: in what ways does theatre and performance facilitate, reflect, and challenge lived relationships within present day Latinx communities, and what are the impacts of those encounters? I argue that theatre and performance practice reflects how the presence of an increasingly diversified U.S. Latinx body politic is prompting alliances at the local, regional, and national levels and the development of new methodologies in the advancement of Latinx performance. The project is situated in the city of Chicago, a geographical site containing rich Latinx theatre communities that have yet to be adequately represented and contextualized within the breadth of Latinx theatre scholarship.
