Academic optimism is a latent construct used to represent a school's optimistic belief system. Physical fitness, also a latent construct, is used to describe a person's physical suitability to perform a specific task. Both are organizational properties of the school that share a common goal of contributing to the development of social capital. Social capital, is the label given by Coleman (1988) to social relationships that support action). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the academic optimism level and fitness level of the school. The SAOS, School Academic Optimism Scale, was used to measure the academic optimism level of each school and the ASPFT, Alabama State Physical Fitness Test, was used to measure the fitness level of the students. School fitness was calculated using the percentage of students who achieved health or high health rankings on fitness components. A total of 1,587 educators from 116 schools in northern Alabama were surveyed. Two hundred and five School Academic Optimism surveys were available for comparison with the physical fitness scores of 11,399 students from 40 schools. The academic optimism level of each school was compared to the fitness level of each school to determine if there was a correlation. School academic optimism, was compared to school physical fitness. A regression analysis was conducted to determine if academic optimism was responsible for the variance in physical fitness scores. The hypothesis that school academic optimism would be positively correlated to and predictive of school physical fitness was not supported by the data available for analysis in this study. Despite the lack of support for the hypothesis, the data did yield some results that provoke thought for future analysis. Multiple variables in this study were strongly correlated to the size of the school and a method for calculating school level physical fitness was introduced.
