Throughout human history romantic love has captivated philosophers, inspired some of the greatest myths, and produced some of the most revered works of art. Most would agree that romantic love is one of the most powerful forces that one experiences in a lifetime. Romantic love, as it is known in Western culture, has not always existed, first appearing in the Middle Ages. A hermeneutic method is applied drawing on object relations, Jungian, and post-Jungian theory to examine romantic love in its relationship to the collective, cultural, and individual unconscious. In exploring the unconscious psychological dynamics in romanticism, the thesis posits how the experience of romantic love might assist in a process of individuation as psychological maturation and movement toward wholeness for individuals and for the cultural collective.
