Education reforms in the United States over the last several decades have placed a major focus on preparing all students for college. In recent years, federal policy has shifted in response to a shortage of skilled workers and the realization that not all students will attend college. Recent federal and state legislation focuses on preparing students to be college and career ready. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of a career development intervention on the career readiness of seventh and eighth grade students. De-identified data was obtained from a lesson conducted in the spring of 2019. The lesson utilized a randomized posttest-only control group design. Subjects in the spring 2019 lesson used for secondary data analysis included seventh and eighth grade students from two middle schools located in Western New York. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to report results. Statistical significance was tested using multivariate analysis of variance. Results of the present study indicated the selected career development activities did not have a positive effect on the career readiness of middle school students.
