California is a unique state, offering varying ecosystems. The Southern Region of the state boasts mountains, deserts, and highlands. Southern California is prone to severe droughts which occur on a regular basis for varying lengths of time. The most recent drought in Southern California spanned from 2012 to 2017. Southern California, and in particular the greater Los Angeles region receives water from various sources both inside and outside of the state. The water California receives from the Colorado River is subject to state policy changes, and the San Joaquin delta is not a reliable source. California's water use is in excess to the amount of water it produces, thus importing is heavily relied on. Looking toward the future, Southern California cannot depend on importing as the main source of water, especially as both population and the agricultural industry continue to grow. Because of this, certain conservation and mitigation methods must be put in place so that the state can continue to grow and prosper. This thesis will delve into the research that others have prepared in the past on the challenges other semi-arid regions have experienced in the face of drought, and how they overcame such obstacles as well as water management and conservation. Analyzing the current supply, demand, and regulations of the California water system will provide a foundation to looking to the future. Finally, this thesis will look into three case studies of current regions in Southern California actively providing mitigation and conservation efforts to provide a better tomorrow.
