This study explores how design occurs in large collaborative projects, specifically open source projects. Design in open source projects is a complex collection of people, institutions, infrastructure, and practices positioned within highly dynamic landscapes. Using open superposition theory as a lens to examine individual design tasks, this research advances design theory by exposing its dynamic nature evident in the shared processes that occur in open source project design. Open source projects provide the context within which to explore design as a shared activity, advancing the key contribution of this research: a new theory of shared design.
