This study examines what factors explain which framework information security professionals intend to, or actually adopt to manage their information security program. The importance of effective security management is significant in today's dynamic cyber threat environment, and no academic study has examined what leads to the adoption of one framework over another. This study leverages the Unified Theory of the Acceptance and Use of Technology as the theoretical foundation, which resulted in these five research questions. First, to what extent does performance expectancy explain which framework information security professionals intend to adopt to manage their information security program? Next, to what extent does effort expectancy explain which framework information security professionals intend to adopt to manage their information security program? Third, to what extent does social influence explain which framework information security professionals intend to adopt to manage their information security program? Fourth, to what extent does facilitating conditions explain which framework information security professionals actually adopt to manage their information security program? Finally, to what extent does behavioral intent influence which framework information security professionals actually adopt to manage their information security program? This study uses a non-experimental, correlational, quantitative research approach which UTAUT constructs are significant predictors towards an information security leader's intention to adopt, or actual adoption of, a particular framework. The population of this study consists of information security leaders with authority to select their organization's security framework for medium-to-large enterprises. The study surveyed a total sample size of 398 from this population to collect the needed data. The analysis determined that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence were significant predictors of the behavioral intention to use a framework, but did not find any significant predictors to the actual use of a framework. Analysis of the data suggests that the notable number of respondents who indicated that their organization mandated the use of a particular framework may have been a contributor to the lack of finding a significant predictor to actual use. A low explanation of variance also indicated that the original UTAUT model might not be effective for addressing the omnibus research question.
