As the Internet of Things (IoT) expands and the utilization by individual consumers, businesses, industry, and healthcare increase, it is important to understand the full scope of the benefits, risks, impact, and policies. The purpose of this research was to analyze how the emersion of the IoT is impacting individual consumers and organizations utilizing IoT devices. How do the benefits of the IoT compare to the risks? How does the IoT impact the individuals and organizations utilizing IoT devices? What regulatory policies need to be enacted to ensure secure use of IoT devices? While there are many benefits such as insight into data that users otherwise would not have access to, privacy and safety is often put at risk. Businesses and the industrial sector utilizing IoT devices allows them advanced integration between systems and ease of analytics. However, the vulnerabilities of IoT devices heighten the risk of threats such as adversarial nation states, terrorist groups, hacktivism, and insiders.Policies on the IoT have been proposed but there are few policies enacted that are tailored to the IoT and its use specifically. The European Union's GDPR has provided an example of policy that protects the users of the IoT devices, and the data captured. This research recommended to improve policies and transparency around the security and privacy. Additionally, it is recommended to research the benefits and risks the IoT has on the government and military. With the popularity of wearable technologies and IoT being utilized in the healthcare industry, it is important to determine if the IOT is making a positive impact on being able to make a diagnosis from collected data. Lastly, it is key to understand if the home automation trend in regard to security is making homes more secure.
