Suicide is the second leading cause of death in people ages 10 - 24. Factors such as mental illness, drug use, and history of victimization, greatly impact the likelihood of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Juvenile justice involved adolescents have been shown to experience heightened levels of these factors. This study examined the relationships between interpersonal connectedness and isolation, and recent suicide attempts among a sample of juvenile justice non-incarcerated youth. A chart review 200 records from a Northeast Family Court Mental Health Clinic was conducted, and logistic regression analyses were run to determine if connectedness and isolation were associated with adolescent suicide above demographic and risk factors. Peer disconnection and family disconnection were found to be associated with increased odds of SA (OR = 3.45 and 2.48 respectively) and social isolation was also associated with increased odds of SA (OR = 8.87) above and beyond the effects of other demographic and risk factors. These findings suggest the importance of further studying social isolation and interpersonal disconnectedness, as well as addressing these factors within clinical, court, and community settings.
