The purpose of this study was to assess the perceived level of knowledge of genetics and genetic testing in nurse practitioners (NPs). A sample of 245 certified NPs in Southern California ranked their opinion of their knowledge of basic genetics, genetic factors in health and disease, and new genetic technologies. The NPs reported an overall poor to fair level of knowledge of genetics and genetic testing. Most NPs (69%) reported a lack of education in genetics. An overwhelming 84.5% believed their educational background had not prepared them to incorporate advances in genetics into their practice, and 74% believed additional education in genetics would be beneficial. Continuing education, professional literature, and genetics information in the NP program were the most common preferences for genetics education sources. Previous genetics education, exposure to genetics, or a perceived need for genetics knowledge in their practice, were significantly correlated with the NPs' knowledge ratings.Subjects--Topical Terms:
