Many institutions of higher learning are adopting virtual desktop (VD) to provide content and empower students and teachers. The use of VD enables learners and educators to access learning content through many computing devices, such as desktop computers in the institutions, personal computers, tablets, and smartphones. VD also enables educators to create technology-enabled collaborative learning environments without having to invest in complex infrastructure or proprietary devices. The benefits of VD for institutions and students include reduced learning costs, competitive programs, equal access to resources, and improved quality of education. Despite the many benefits of VD, there are numerous barriers to student use of desktop virtualization in a classroom environment. There is a gap in literature because existing work has not documented the perceptions of students from different age groups on the barriers to and strengths of the adoption of VD in higher education. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study was to identify key student user-cited barriers to adoption of desktop virtualization in higher education and student-based potential solutions to those barriers to adoption. Open-ended interviews of 15 students from St. Cloud State University were conducted to collect information regarding student perceptions on the advantages and limitations of VD in their educational experience. CBAM and TAM were used in this study to provide a perspective from which to examine VD in higher education. Interview data were coded for themes that addressed the research questions. Interview data were triangulated to increase confidence in the reliability of the thematic analysis. Students cited the ability to work from different locations, the ability to access up-to-date programs, and ease of accessing resources as key benefits of VD. Barriers to adoption of VD included difficulty finding a computer towards the end of the semester due to a large number of students trying to access the resources, lack of guidance on VD usage, slow connection, lack of enough resources, and congestion in the lab. Students also proposed that programs that are expensive to purchase as an individual, but required for learning should be acquired by the university for desktop virtualization. To resolve some of the barriers, existing networking infrastructure should be replaced with up-to-date devices. Future research should document user-cited benefits of VD, create VD initiatives that are adequately resourced and examine what the optimal numbers of students assigned time to access and use the VD resources.
