The current study is an attempt to replicate Wurm and Vakoch (2000) using the auditory word naming task and controlling for both concreteness and polysemy. It was observed that the danger and usefulness main effects, and interaction, disappeared when polysemy was added to the analysis, but reappeared when RTs were measured from the uniqueness point. A second experiment used the delayed naming task to assess whether semantic variables were perceptual or post-perceptual. Three delays were chosen (333, 667, and 1,000 msec after stimulus offset) and in separate analyses all four semantic variables predicted response latencies in some of the delay conditions, with danger and usefulness most noticeably influencing delayed responses. The third experiment was a semantic categorization task using danger and usefulness as categories and "High" and "Low" as responses. Polysemy significantly inhibited usefulness rating latencies, and many of the variables influenced both danger and usefulness responses. The final experiment was a perceptual identification task using white noise, and again it was observed that all four variables predicted recognition accuracy. It was concluded that, whether perceptual or post-perceptual, these variables are important to routine word recognition and that more research is needed using objective semantic measures. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
