The coral reefs of Guanica Bay, Puerto Rico are threatened by numerous stressors, including land based sources of pollution, however our understanding of the sources and impact of these pollutants is limited. Here, an interdisciplinary approach was used to determine the impact of a human-manipulated watershed on nearshore coral reefs. Stable isotopic and trace element analyses of a coral skeleton core with spatial modeling using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) were used. This study detected changes in stable isotopic and trace metal chemistry that recorded sediment producing land use practices including historical agricultural practices. The SWAT results spatially delineated the relative sources of sediment pollution in this watershed. Together, these findings provide land use managers with insights into the anthropogenic influence on coral reefs. Overall, these results can assist with implementation of effective management strategies that will reduce negative impacts to the coral reefs of Guanica Bay.
