The purpose of this research paper was to analyze the anti-forensic tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) cybercriminals use to hide electronic evidence of crimes. As technology advances and the availability of criminal services on the Internet grows, the job of digital forensic investigators becomes more challenging. This challenge is increased when cyber-criminals utilize anti-forensic TTPs to hide or delete evidentiary files or attempt to mislead or derail investigations. When anti-forensic TTPs are utilized by cyber-criminals, several problems may arise. The digital forensic investigators may not be able to compile enough evidence to determine an accurate assessment of the situation in question when data is hidden or deleted. When facing anti-forensic TTPs which attack the investigation process specifically, the validity of the investigation itself may be called into question. Therefore, digital forensic investigators should be trained on anti-forensic TTPs, how to detect their usage, and how to counter them. Furthermore, anyone who has access to the Internet has access to anti-forensic software tools, tutorials, and forums. The Internet provides an abundance of information and tools for individuals who want to maintain their anonymity on the Internet or their personal computer. This availability of tools and information means cyber-criminals with little or no technical skills are able to perform anti-forensic TTPs beyond their level of expertise. Often, anti-forensic software tools are marketed and available in the form of privacy or computer optimization software. Combined with the illicit forums available on the Dark Web, the Internet provides a means for the proliferation of anti-forensic TTPs. The developers of computer forensic tools should be aware of the techniques available which attack the tools themselves or their validity.
