This thesis analyzes the juxtaposition within print publications of self-representation and mainstream media's often misrepresentation of the activists groups the Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement. I argue that the Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement needed the media in order to gain national public attention (through the mainstream) in addition to promoting empowerment, justice and reaffirmation of Black and Native identity (through self-representation). But the media ultimately functioned as a tool that manipulated and discredited the Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement's public image.
