Native American communities suffer from high rates of violence due to homicides, suicides, and other traumas. In one county in the Southeastern United States (US) with a large Native American population, Native Americans account for 50% of all homicides, with 81% of those homicides involving a firearm. Researchers have studied violence in Native American communities in various ways, but there was a gap in the literature on Native American community violence with a specific focus on the Southeastern US tribe (identified as the Tribe for this study). The purpose of this study was to use an appreciative inquiry (AI) form of action research to investigate individual Tribal member views and perceptions about the negative effects of community violence in the Tribe's community. The results will be used by a community task force to develop culturally specific educational programs and interventions to address the needs of the Tribe. An AI design allowed participants in the study to be a part of the research team. The researcher implemented a multi-method design using both semi-structured interviews and a focus group. The theoretical framework for the study was historical trauma theory and ecological systems theory. The goal was to work together with participants to gain an understanding and consensus on what violence looks like in the Tribe's community, and lay the groundwork for the development of culturally specific educational programs and interventions to address the needs of the Tribe. Results of data analysis indicated the two main types of violence were (a) physical violence (e.g., assaults, homicides), and (b) domestic violence. Results of data analysis also indicated the causes of violence were (a) substance abuse, (b) poverty, and (c) a Tribal culture of violence. Furthermore, the data analysis indicated that (a) education, (b) collaboration, and (c) community support are what participants would like to see from a violence prevention program. Future research should be conducted to incorporate more community involvement using an action research design.
