The intent of this study was to explore the perceptual impact of music lyrics on participants' perception of self-narrative. Interviews were designed to explore how respondents use lyrics to define identity, particularly as that use relates to relationships and life challenges. Another purpose of this research was to better understand how music lyrics influence identity, particularly regarding the morals, values, and beliefs of respondents. This study built on previous research, particularly the work of McAdams' (2001) whose evolved theory on life stories and self-narrative includes the individual's perception of the past, present, and future; Bruner's (1991) evolved theory on how humans develop and achieve reality through distributed intelligence and narrative; and Kaufman and Libby's (2012) research on the effects of experience-taking with regards to beliefs and behavior. The researcher conducted structured interviews with a purposeful sample based on three characteristics: at least age 18, acknowledgement that their lives have in some way been impacted by music lyrics, and willingness to complete an interview. Content analysis was used to analyze participant responses. Dedoose was used to analyze data and determine any themes that would support responses to the research questions.
